چکیده

Current B This conversion sacrifi ces color vision in favor of improved sensitivity in motion detection. Love spot R7s are modifi ed in two main ways: fi rst, they now respond to a broad spectrum instead of narrower ranges of color; and second, they connect to the motion-processing and spatial vision pathways of the brain — to the lamina instead of the medulla. This rewiring of the brain contributes one additional photoreceptor input per ommatidium toward motion processing and should in principle provide additional sensitivity, though perhaps as little as an 8% overall increase. It is possible that this additional sensitivity provides enough of an advantage to male Musca to be worth the loss of color vision across much of the visual fi eld.

Mitosis: Moesin and the Importance of Being Round

Ezrin/radixin/moesin proteins link the actin cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane. Two new reports have found that moesin phosphorylation is essential for mitotic cell rounding and identify a new role for cell rounding in spindle assembly.

Programmed Cell Death: A New Way Worms Get Rid of Unwanted Cells

The genetics and predictable cell death lineages in Caenorhabditis elegans have been critical for identifying a conserved apoptosis pathway. Yet, cells still die in mutants that disrupt this pathway. A recent study shows that this death occurs by cell shedding.

Dead cells get the squeeze

acrophages can clean up the detritus of dying cells. But that, say Jody Rosenblatt, Martin Raff, and Louise Cramer (University College London, London, UK), is not the whole story. They have found that cells undergoing apoptosis in an epithelial sheet signal to their neighbors to begin squeezing, in a process that maintains the barrier function of the epithelium while extruding the dying cell. M...

Jody Rosenblatt: To extrude apically or basally, that is the question

T he primary function of epithelia is to serve as a barrier between a tissue and the surrounding environment. To preserve the integrity of the epithelial sheet, therefore, a dying epi-thelial cell is evicted from the monolayer by a special process called extrusion. But epithelial extrusion has major implications for phenomena beyond epithelial barrier function, as Jody Rosenblatt explained to u...

The tumor suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli controls the direction in which a cell extrudes from an epithelium

Despite high rates of cell death, epithelia maintain intact barriers by squeezing dying cells out using a process termed cell extrusion. Cells can extrude apically into the lumen or basally into the tissue the epithelium encases, depending on whether actin and myosin contract at the cell base or apex, respectively. We previously found that microtubules in cells surrounding a dying cell target p...
